Youku presents a different challenge from most streaming services: the problem is not that it detects your VPN, but that standard commercial VPN servers have non-Chinese IP addresses, which Youku simply does not accept. The approach here is different from unblocking a UK or US service and does not follow the usual server-switching pattern.
Why Youku is only accessible in China
Youku is one of China's three major streaming platforms, alongside iQIYI and Tencent Video, with a large catalogue of Chinese dramas, variety shows, and films. Its content is almost entirely licensed for the Chinese market only. Unlike services such as iQIYI, which has a dedicated international edition, Youku doesn't operate a separate international platform, so a VPN with Chinese server support is the only way to access it from abroad.
Fix 1: Connect to a China VPN server
Accessing Youku requires a Chinese IP address. Due to China's strict VPN regulations, most VPN providers don't offer China server locations at all. The providers that do (NordVPN and ExpressVPN) don't operate physical servers inside China. Instead, they offer virtual Chinese servers: machines physically located in Hong Kong, Singapore, or Japan that present a Chinese IP address.
In NordVPN, search for China in the server list. In ExpressVPN, select China from the location list. Connect, confirm you have a Chinese IP via our IP checker, then open youku.com. If your current VPN has no China option in its server list, switching to one of these providers is the most practical solution.
Fix 2: Try a different China server if blocked
If Youku shows an access restriction after connecting, try a different China virtual server. Youku keeps an actively updated list of VPN servers it has blocked of known VPN IPs and updates it regularly. Switching to a different server in the China pool usually resolves this.
If NordVPN's China servers aren't working, try ExpressVPN's China option as an alternative. Different providers use different IP pools, so a server that's blocked with one provider may work fine with another.
If switching servers doesn't help, check whether your VPN is leaking DNS traffic. Use our IP checker after connecting: if it shows your real location despite the VPN being on, your DNS isn't sending your traffic through the China server correctly. Enable your VPN's DNS leak protection or switch protocols in the VPN app settings.
Fix 3: Clear cookies and use a private window
If you've previously accessed Youku without a VPN, or connected to the wrong server, Youku may have cached your real location. Clear Youku cookies before connecting, then open a private window.
Chrome: three-dot menu > Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data, tick Cookies, set range to All time.
Firefox: hamburger menu > Settings > Privacy & Security > Clear Data.
Safari: Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data > Remove All.
After clearing cookies, open a private window with the VPN already connected, and go straight to youku.com.
Fix 4: Use the browser instead of the app
Youku's mobile app performs additional location checks that can override your VPN connection. If you're connected to a China server but the app still shows a geo-restriction, the app is likely reading your device region or system locale rather than relying solely on your IP.
Switch to youku.com in your phone's browser (Chrome or Safari on mobile) with the VPN connected. The website version relies primarily on IP-based checks, which your VPN handles reliably. Alternatively, set your device region to China in your phone settings before launching the app, which can reduce friction with the additional checks some app versions perform.
Youku accounts and premium content
Youku has a free tier with ads and a Youku VIP subscription for ad-free viewing and access to premium dramas and films. VIP is priced for the Chinese domestic market and is substantially cheaper than Western streaming services.
Registration requires a Chinese phone number or a Taobao/Alipay account. There is no workaround if you have neither: the free tier allows you to browse and watch a selection of content on the website without logging in, though some titles will still require a login.
For international users interested in Chinese dramas, it's worth checking iQIYI International first: it requires no China server, no Chinese account, and includes English subtitles by default.
